Your Task

In the lesson, you explored what creative voice is and how it emerges from patterns in your writing. Now you'll put that understanding into practice by creating a portfolio that documents your unique voice.

Directions

  1. Select Your Work
    Choose 3–4 pieces of your writing from different units in this course.
  2. Analyze Each Piece
    For each piece, write a brief analysis (3–5 sentences) identifying:
    • The dominant tone
    • Your word choice patterns
    • The sentence structures you favored
    • Any themes that recur
  3. Write Your Voice Statement
    Write a "Voice Statement" (150–200 words): a description of your creative voice as if you were introducing yourself to a writing group. What do you bring to the table? What are your signature strengths? What are you still developing?
  4. Choose Your Representative Passage
    Select one sentence or short passage from your own work that you think best represents your voice. Copy it and explain in 2–3 sentences why it captures who you are as a writer.

Important: About Using AI

Do not use AI to write your Voice Statement or analyze your own work. The whole point of this activity is self-discovery — understanding what makes YOUR writing distinctive. AI cannot do this for you because it doesn't know your creative journey.

After writing your complete Voice Statement, you may use AI to check grammar only.

What to Submit

Your submission should include:

  • Your 3–4 writing samples with annotations
  • Your Voice Statement (150–200 words)
  • Your representative passage with explanation (2–3 sentences)
