How can the art of collaborative storytelling help you discover your voice as a writer?
This course uses the world of Dungeons & Dragons as a creative framework for developing your skills as a writer. Over six units, you will build fantasy worlds, create complex characters, design narrative structures, craft dialogue and voice, plan interactive campaigns, and bring everything together in a capstone project. Along the way, you will read mentor texts from published authors, give and receive peer feedback, evaluate AI-generated writing, and reflect on your growth as a storyteller.
You do not need any experience with D&D to succeed in this course. Every game concept is explained as it comes up, and the focus is always on the writing skills, not game mechanics. D&D is the lens, but the craft you develop belongs to every kind of storytelling.
Each unit follows a consistent cycle designed to build your skills step by step:
| Phase | What Happens | What You Do |
|---|---|---|
| Learn | Lessons introduce new concepts with examples and mentor texts | Read, watch, take notes, and complete checks to confirm understanding |
| Practice | Activities give you hands-on opportunities to try new techniques | Experiment with low-stakes writing exercises and receive feedback |
| Apply | Assignments ask you to create original work using what you have learned | Write drafts, submit creative work, and demonstrate your skills |
| Revise | Peer review and self-reflection help you improve your work | Give and receive feedback, revise drafts, and reflect on your growth |
This cycle repeats within each unit, giving you multiple opportunities to learn, practice, and grow before moving on.

This curriculum uses the storytelling concepts of the Dungeons & Dragons™ game system as a creative writing lens. Specifically, it aligns with the 2024 Player's Handbook (often called "5.5e" or "5e 2024"), as published by Wizards of the Coast in System Reference Document v5.2 (SRD 5.2) under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. The earlier SRD 5.1, covering the 2014 Player's Handbook ("5e"), remains publicly available; both can be found on Wizards of the Coast's SRD page (5.2 appears first; 5.1 follows below). Where the two editions differ — for example, "species" (5.5e) versus "races" (5e), or which fields appear on the official character sheet — this course follows 5.5e. Game references in the course are drawn only from the SRD; named factions, NPCs, settings, and creatures unique to Wizards of the Coast products do not appear in the curriculum.
